Birmingham, Alabama, Elder Law Attorney
Make sure you have the knowledge and information you need to make smart decisions and help your family member or loved one grow old with the level of dignity and compassion they deserve.
Growing old with dignity is something we all hope for. It seems that as time goes on it gets harder to do, especially when financial matters, legal questions, and other obstacles stand in the way.
The areas in which I provide advice and representation include:
- Alabama Medicaid eligibility information
- Avoiding "spend-down"
- VA/ Veteran's benefits
- Long-term care insurance issues
- Social security disability benefits
- Conservatorships, Guardianships, Probate
- Nursing home abuse, elder abuse
- Estate planning, including wills and trusts
If you have elder law questions or need help with matters involving the care of an elderly family member or friend, I can help.
I am a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), and also working towards certification as a "certified elder law attorney" (CELA). I also serve as a board member on the Jefferson County Council on Aging.
What is Elder Law?
Elder Law - the title itself is confusing.
What makes elderly people somehow different than everyone else?
There isn’t “teenage law” or “infant law”. What exactly is Elder law?
Elder Law is the name given to the practice of law that spans several areas of the law rather than being focused in one practice area like personal injury or criminal defense or real estate. Oftentimes a person will call not knowing what to ask for, only knowing that they need help. It may be for themselves or a family member and they feel lost, confused and frustrated that the system has grown too complex. That is why we are here! For example - The rules for qualifying for Medicaid coverage are quite complex. The average cost to stay in a nursing home is now about $4,500 per month! Your Elder Law attorney may be able to find a way to have you or your loved one become qualified for Medicaid coverage, thus saving significant sums over time. As an Alabama elder law attorney and Charter member of the Alabama Bar Association's Elder Law Section, I, attorney William G. Nolan, can help you understand your rights, inform you of your options, and fight for the benefits to which you or your loved one may be entitled.
